American Soldier

This exhibition explores the emotional and psychological impact of war, as pictured in over fifty photographs of American servicemen and women. These images, which date from the Civil War to recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, connect past and present. Collectively, they have shaped the way we think about, and remember, the experience of military conflicts throughout history. Represented are men and women from the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force.

The photographs featured in American Soldier were made for a variety of different purposes. Photojournalism, documentary and artistic practices are all represented. Each of these contexts affects the way we interpret these photographs, as vehicles for reportage, political persuasion, instruction, and personal expression.
