Become a volunteer docent
Nelson-Atkins docents are trained volunteers who lead interactive tours and create welcoming, engaging experiences for guests of all ages. They become skilled educators, guiding guests through the museum’s collection and exhibitions while sparking curiosity, conversation, and connection.
Training and commitment
Initial training
The docent program begins with a nine-week core curriculum that prepares you to lead tours with confidence.
- Schedule: Choose Tuesday or Saturday mornings, 9 am–1 pm.
- Duration: Nine sessions (January–March), plus two to three hours of homework and practice each week.
- Style: Hands-on, interactive, and discussion-based.
- Content: Teaching strategies and art history in the context of in-gallery activities.
Ongoing commitments
Once your initial training is complete, you’ll begin giving tours in the galleries and continue to grow your skills through ongoing continuing education each year.
- Complete at least 24 shifts per year.
- Participate in continuing education throughout the year.

The rewards of becoming a docent
Docents often describe the experience as transformative. You’ll connect with the museum and the Kansas City community on a deeper level, develop new skills, and gain knowledge that will enrich not just our guests, but yourself. Along the way, you’ll form friendships with fellow volunteers and staff and help Nelson-Atkins guests of all ages discover the joy of learning and cultural understanding.
“I have gone through many professional trainings…this training has been the most challenging, interesting, and engaging experience I have ever had.”
