Strikingly original in its time, Marsden Hartley’s art thrills our contemporary eyes and minds with undeniable vitality.
While his gifts as a painter went largely unappreciated and underestimated during his lifetime, Hartley emerges today as one of the greatest artists of the early 20th century.
Featuring more than 80 remarkable paintings and drawings, Marsden Hartley (1877–1943): American Painter presented key examples from all four decades of his career. This retrospective, the first in more than 20 years, confirmed Hartley’s final arrival in a place he long sought––on the roster of the most accomplished and celebrated American artists of the modern era.
