Artist in Focus: George Engleheart and His Circle

Portrait miniatures were cherished tokens of love and connection in the 18th century, capturing the likenesses of friends and family in exquisite detail. George Engleheart (English, 1750–1829) was one of the era’s most prolific and celebrated miniaturists, known for his evolving style and meticulous records. His early works are small and delicately rendered, while his later miniatures feature bolder colors and expressive features.

Engleheart trained at the Royal Academy in London, and likely operated a studio of assistants, including his second cousin Thomas Richmond (English, 1771–1837) and nephew John Cox Dillman Engleheart (English, 1783–1862), whose miniatures are also featured in this display. Their work reflects George Engleheart’s influence while remaining distinct in their own right. Engleheart’s professional network extended beyond his studio, as he collaborated with leading casemakers and fellow artists, underscoring the interconnected world of miniature painting in Georgian England.

This focus exhibition explores Engleheart’s artistry and legacy, offering a glimpse into the intimate and intricate world of portrait miniatures.

The Starr Collection of Miniatures in the Bloch Galleries
Presented to the Nelson-Atkins by Mr. and Mrs. John W. Starr in two major gifts from 1958 and 1965, and numerous additional gifts through the years, the Starr Collection of Miniatures illustrates the history of European portrait miniatures through more than 250 objects. The exhibition of portrait miniatures in Gallery P24 changes every twelve months to highlight the variety of the collection and to limit exposure of the light-sensitive pigments.

Organized by The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
