How to use the library
Visit Spencer Art Reference Library in person, search the collection through our online catalog, or explore our digital resources.
Search the catalog
Our catalog allows users to search more than 290,000 physical items and 48,000 digital publications by artist, description, title, or ISBN. Search results can be filtered to find the resources that are most relevant to you.
Create an account
Accounts are optional but expand your access to library resources — including requesting materials, viewing holds, and saving catalog searches. Library accounts are separate from Museum membership.

Access specialized databases
The library offers free access to significant subscription databases, including art encyclopedias, academic journals, and newspapers.
To access these subscription services:
- Guests: Members of the public must be on the Nelson-Atkins campus to access these resources. Access is available through the Library’s dedicated resource page.
- Staff: Nelson-Atkins staff members can access these services remotely but must be logged into their library account.
Request materials
Although you can’t check out materials, the Library’s Reading Room was designed for readers. Requested materials are held at the reference desk and can be used inside the Reading Room.
To request an item via the catalog:
- Be sure you’re signed in to your library account. Locate the item in the catalog search. In the expanded view of the item’s record under “Get It,” you should see an option to “Request” the item.
- Click the request link and follow the prompts. Requests are pulled at 10 am and 1 pm on days the Library is open. Once an item is available for pick-up, we will notify you.
