Notes

[1] As recorded in the Philbrook Museum of Art donor file. Two separate notes in Mrs. Starr’s hand indicate this work was purchased in Washington, D.C. One refers to Mrs. Curtis in 1956, while the other does not mention a source and gives the date as 1959.

This work was previously attributed to, and likely sold to the Starrs as a work by, Thomas Sully (American, 1783–1872). After consultation with Carol Aiken and Elle Shushan in 2012, the attribution was removed.
