Provenance

Probably Carol Hubert Samuelson (1899–1984), Devon, England, by February 9, 1960 [1];

Sold at his sale, Catalogue of a Fine Collection of English & Continental Miniatures of the 17th, 18th & Early 19th Centuries, Christie’s, London, February 9, 1960, lot 158, as Miss Lucy Engleheart, Leggatt Brothers, London, probably on behalf of Mr. John W. (1905–2000) and Mrs. Martha Jane (1906–2011) Starr, Kansas City, MO, 1960–1961 [2];

Current location unknown.

NOTES:

[1] The 1960 sale declares, “The Property of C. H. Samuelson, Esq.” This is most likely Carol Hubert Samuelson. Carol’s wife, Doris Templer, died in 1960, which probably initiated the sale of their portrait miniatures. The Cleveland Museum of Art describes a “Mrs. Samuelson of Exeter” in communication with miniature specialist, Arthur Jaffé, in 1948. This suggests the same person, since Carol and Doris also lived in Exeter, Devon. See John Smart, Portrait of a Woman, ca. 1776, graphite and wash on laid paper, The Cleveland Museum of Art, 1941.565, https://www.clevelandart.org/art/1941.565.

[2] The lot description states, “Miss Lucy Engleheart, by J. C. D. Engleheart, full face, in a landscape, wearing grey coat with pink lining and grey bonnet with pink ribbon – oval, 2 7/8 in. high – ormolu frame. Exhibited at the Engleheart Exhibition No. 392. See illustration facing page 18.” Archival research has shown that Leggatt Brothers served as purchasing agents for the Starrs. See correspondence between Betty Hogg and Martha Jane Starr, May 15 and June 3, 1950, Nelson-Atkins curatorial files.

Exhibitions
