Notes

[1] G. J. Winner, Esq. is probably George Joseph Winner (1910–1975) of Kensington, England, father of the film director Michael Winner.

[2] “A pair of very fine miniatures of a lady and gentleman, by Jeremiah Meyer, the man head and shoulders, three-quarters sinister, gaze directed at spectator, with powdered hair, wearing a white cravat, and light brown coat, the lady nearly full-face, with high-piled hair and bandeau-like head-dress, in low-cut pink dress with white-frilled edge, gold slide frames, 1 3/4 in., brilliant quality and condition, in oval shagreen case, 3 1/2 in.” The annotated catalogue for this sale is located at University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Miller Nichols Library. The annotations are most likely by Mr. or Mrs. Starr. Lot 103 is annotated in pencil and pen with “£58” written to the left of the circled lot number.

[3] “A pair of miniatures of a lady and gentleman, he with powdered hair en queue and wearing a brown jacket over a white waistcoat open to reveal a white lace ruffle, his wife with high-piled powdered hair adorned with a gauze scarf and wearing a low-cut pink dress with a white tucker, each against a cloud and sky background and within a gold slide frame, mounted together in a fitted hinged shagreen case, each oval 1 11/16 in.; 4.3 cm.” The annotated catalogue has a circled lot number and lists “2400” below the lot description.
