Notes

[1] “A miniature of a lady by David Des Granges, signed and dated 1656, head and shoulders three-quarters sinister, gaze directed at spectator, her black hair in ringlets, dressed in pearls, and wearing pearl earrings and necklace, in low-cut blue dress, in very good state of preservation, 2 1/2 in. This miniature, which is an unusually good example of the work of David Des Granges, is in better condition than most of his work, and is noted by Basil Long, British Miniaturists, p. 124.” According to the annotated auction catalogue, Leggatt bought lot 16 for £105. Archival research has shown that Leggatt Brothers served as purchasing agents for the Starrs. See correspondence between Betty Hogg and Martha Jane Starr, May 15 and June 3, 1950, Nelson-Atkins curatorial files.
