[1] “A fine miniature of a girl, by John Smart, signed with initials and dated 1765, oval, 1 1/4 in. (32 mm.) high—gold frame with four pearls about the border. Facing right in blue dress with pink rose at corsage, fur-bordered white surcoat, pearl necklace, blue plumes in gauze turban headgear. Provenance: Mr. and Mrs. John Starr of Kansas City.” The following lot, 83, describes, “A sketch for the preceding portrait.”
[2] “A young Lady, facing right in blue dress with white underslip bordered with pearls, pink rose at corsage, fur-bordered pale yellow surcoat, a lace turban and blue plumes in her upswept hair, signed with initials and dated ‘J.S. 1765’ (lower left), oval, 1 1/4 in.
