Deaf Culture Project

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art was awarded a three-year grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to provide quality, accessible, and inclusive interpretive and educational programs for visitors who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing.

The Nelson-Atkins will create a suite of interrelated products and activities during the grant period (2017-2020), including:

  • Live captioning (CART) for selected presentations in Atkins Auditorium– look for the captioning symbol on our Calendar of Events
  • ASL video guides with captions for an immersive in-gallery experience
  • Tours in ASL of the museum’s collection, led by a Deaf or hard of hearing staff member
  • Deaf Cultural Festival, an annual festival celebrating ASL during Kansas City’s Deaf Cultural Month. Join us Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019 for our next festival!
