Artist Demonstration: Joseph T. Newton

Engage with local artist Joseph Newton as he demonstrates his signature style influenced by Egyptian art. A skilled oil painter, Joseph’s fascination with ancient Egypt goes beyond formal concerns. For him, “Pharaohs ascended to the throne through their mother’s side of the family. Females were very powerful in Egyptian culture. There was balance.” Joseph likes adding geometric graphics into his paintings as a way of giving them greater depth and 3D qualities. One of Newton’s strategies is to maximize detail portions of Egyptian artifacts that others might miss, such as the interior of a gold-and-electrum-plated lobed cup from approximately 1000 BCE, or feathers and pieces of jewelry dated from around 1325 BCE. Stop by as he experiments with his ink-tints process.

Gallery Performance: Traditional Music

World music multi-instrumentalist Chris Stephens specializes in the family of instruments known as “lutes,” the ancestors of the guitar. His main focus is to share these historic art forms with new audiences and to engage those who are familiar with them by honoring the old traditional styles and compositions. He’ll be playing an instrument called an oud, made in Cairo by the luthier Mahmoud Dagher, in a traditional Egyptian improvisational performance style called taqsim. Wander through the gallery or feel free to take a seat and let the music wash over you.
