Frequently Asked Questions
Studio Classes for Children and Adults

How do I enroll in a class?
You may enroll by calling 816.751.1ART (1278, option 2) or click here to enroll online. Enrollment is also available onsite at the Ford Learning Center Main Office during regular office hours, Wednesday-Saturday. The Ford Learning Center Main Office is located next to Atkins Auditorium on the Lobby level of the Nelson-Atkins Building.

What is the enrollment deadline?
Enrollment deadline is three days prior to the class or workshop.

What if a class is full? Can I go on a waiting list?
A waiting list is created for classes that have filled to capacity. Should someone cancel their enrollment, people on the waiting list will be notified in order. Call 816.751.1ART (1278, option 2) to be placed on a waiting list.

What if I need to cancel my enrollment, can I get a refund?
Enrollment fees are refunded if the cancellation is made more than five business days prior to the class or workshop. There is a $15 processing fee per enrollment for cancellations. Please note: No refunds are issued if the cancellation is made less than five business days prior to a class or workshop.

If I need to cancel my enrollment, can I receive credit to attend another class in the future?
We do not issue class credits toward future sessions, however a refund is issued if the cancellation is made more than five business days prior to the class or workshop. (see previous question.)

What if I need to switch my enrollment to a different class?
If switching an enrollment from one class or workshop to another, a $10 transfer fee will be incurred per student/per class basis. Please feel certain of your schedule and class selection before enrolling to avoid incurring this charge.

What if a class is cancelled?
Classes that do not reach minimum enrollment will be cancelled and fees refunded 100%.

Can I drop my child off at the entrance to the Museum?
For their safety, all students under the age of 16 must be escorted to their classroom by an adult. Students younger than 16 may not be dropped off in the parking garage or at any of the Museum entrances.

Where do I park?
Parking is available in the parking garage free of charge for up to 30 minutes. This allows ample time for escorting students to and from class. Parking is always free for Museum members. Non-members parking for more than 30 minutes - either to attend class or wait while a student is in class – will pay $5 per vehicle. A limited amount of street parking is available around the Museum as well.

Can I bring food or drinks into the Museum?
No food or drink is allowed in the Museum, including the Ford Learning Center.

Can I bring food treats for the students in my child’s class?
Due to possible food allergies or other dietary restrictions, we do not allow food or drink to be served to students in Ford Learning Center classes.

Can Ford Learning Center staff watch my child if he/she attends classes all day?
Ford Learning Center staff cannot supervise a student during the lunch break between morning and afternoon classes. You will need to provide an adult chaperone to accompany your child during this time.

Do you cancel classes during bad weather?
The Museum follows the closing policy of the University of Missouri – Kansas City. If UMKC closes then the Museum will close as well. Local television stations will announce UMKC closings.

If classes are cancelled do you have a make-up session?
Should the Museum close due to weather and classes are cancelled, a make-up class will be offered.

My child has a friend visiting. May they come to class? Can I attend class with my child?
Sorry, but students may not bring guests to class. Parents/guardians may only attend classes in which they are enrolled (i.e. classes designed for adults and children to attend together).

My child will miss a class due to another scheduling conflict. Can he/she attend a different class to make up this absence?
We’re sorry but students may only attend the class in which they have enrolled. They may not attend another class if they miss a class period. Please check your schedule carefully before enrolling to avoid this situation.

What happens to my child’s artwork if they are absent the last day of class?
If students miss the final day of class, their artwork will be held for two weeks. We do not keep artwork beyond the two weeks. Call 816.751.1ART (1278, option 2) to inquire about picking up artwork.

My child’s -or my own- artwork has been retained for possible exhibition in the Ford Learning Center Student Gallery. What happens now?
You will receive a postcard by mail notifying you when the artwork is on display and indicating how long it will be exhibited. You will receive a second postcard when the artwork is taken down with instructions provided on picking up the work. Artwork will be kept for pick-up for three months after being exhibited.

Where do I go to pick-up artwork?
Artwork may be claimed in the Ford Learning Center Main Office during regular office hours, Wednesday–Saturday. Please phone ahead (816.751.1303) so that we may have the artwork ready for you.   The Ford Learning Center office is located next to Atkins Auditorium on the Lobby level of the Nelson-Atkins Building.
