Enrique Chagoya: ‘Return to Goya’s Caprichos’

July 6, 2006—December 31, 2006

A suite of eight contemporary prints by Enrique Chagoya (American, b. 1953, Mexico City) recast “Los Caprichos,” well-known satirical etchings by Francisco Goya y Lucientes (Spanish, 1746-1828), in the modern world. Caricatures of public figures such as Linda Tripp, Jesse Helms and Jerry Falwell populated this savagely witty series from 1999, on view for the first time since being presented by the Museum’s Print Society in 2005.

Enrique Chagoya, American, born Mexico, 1953. “De que mal morira,” from the series “Return to Goya’s Caprichos,” 1999. Etching with aquatint on paper, 26/40. Purchase: gift of the Print Society. 2005.2.8
